30 years of TEFL/TESL : A personal Reflection

Findings by Moises Gonzalez .
I would want to mention that in many countries , English Language is now being introduced as a primary language , this means that English Language learning and teaching is now more important that it was 30 years ago .
New curriculums have been implemented too , this includes Competency Based , genre based and content based models , this new elements have obliged to the institutions to use another textbooks and the most important and concerning to me is change the way the teachers teach the language.
As a response for the new trends and reflections about the way English is being taught , Jack Richards mentioned how dictionaries,methodologies, approaches and anthologies and practices teaching english have been modified to accomplish with the new discovers , withing this books we can mention Longman Diccionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics ( 2002 ), Approaches and Methods in Language Teaching ( 2001 ) , An Anthology of Current Practice ( 2002 ), I personally thing it is very short time to revise those books since they were published , this only mean that changes in education are occurring very fast.
Jack Richards made a reflection about his own way teaching and all the influences looking back 30 years , and this influences have shaped his own thinking and professional practice leading him to ask thre questions which I am considering critical too ,
1 . What are the key questions we have to be care of about language teaching ?
2. What did we believe and understand about teaching 30 years ago ?
3. What do we believe and understand now about teaching now ?
I am sure that if an authority in education as Jack Richards is reflecting about this matters , we must reflect ourselves as well , I could never consider by myself as an expert in education , I am learning from the experts and tryiing to be better day by day .
Jack Richards is going to make 8 questions that I will try to summarize,understand and apply in the classroom , bassically are :
a. What are the goals of teaching english ?
b. What is the best way to teach ?
c.What is the grammar function in language teaching ?
e. What are the processes involved in second in second language learning ?
f. What is the learner role ?
g. How can we teach the four skills ?
h. How can we evaluate students.
i . How can we prepare language teachers .
Now join me to analyze with Jack Richard these 8 questions , He will present this questions as a comparison between before and now .
About the first question asking about goals of teaching English it is mentioned that the purposes are taken for granted , like provide untold blessings to those who succeeded in learning , but talking about nowadays , The English Language learning is part of the globalisation , International communication ,commerce and trade as well,proficiency in English is needed for employees to advance in international companies and improve their technical knowledge,all this matters implies that English is playing an important role in the world , I personally think the same , I have never had investigated the trends in teaching language , but now I can explain better this elements.
Another interesting part of this article it is about the role that native speakers were playing 30 years ago , they were consider crucial to teach the language , as with privilege status , a kind of owners of the language and arbiters of pedagogic norms , but now , experts states that speaking another language is not a matter of eradicate mother tongue,this is more associated with phonological intelligibility.
What about textbooks ?,they are no longer seen as indispensable tools , these can be only a way to interfere in the learning processes .shows a comparison about English teaching,but a couple have called my attention , the first one is : Native speakers accent the target , Now the target it is the comprehensibility.
But now there is a question that I consider as The question of one million of dollars , What is the best way to teach English ? . Well on this article Jack Richards analyse 5 subjects before to get to a conclusion ,these are ; Methods , Approaches , Context and resources and Influences from corporate sector ,finally , my finding on this part is that the Learning occurs inside and outside of the classrooms , as teachers m we must use Internet as a learning and teaching resources and that Educational software is part of the curriculum.
What about grammar role in the teaching language ? .

We are going to use different structures according to diferent levels.
New concepts were introduced to explain what is the correct way to introduce the language in diferent levels .

There was another journal to do . the though was ” Succes is 99% failure ” .
A question was presented .What is more important ? Accuraccy or fluently ih i?, that was a debatable question but the real information is :
70 % Fluency and 30 % is accuarcy .
Talking about Intermediate students . the correct it is approximately 50% Fluency and 50% accuracy.
Teaching Culture was another matter to discuss , some web pages were provided too , Examples .
Another tecnique was used to make students develop language , this was ” Ranking ” . We made an excercise and we rang the three most impotant things for Salvadorans in an order of 1 to 5 , this was a TBI . ( Task Base Instruction)

• Teaching vocabulary we can select use web logs , a word in the center y try the students write other words related to the same word .
• We should always go whith the new vocabulary from what students know toward the students don’t know.
• Activate at all time schema,
• Another way to teach is only bring a picture and try students only describe tge picture , not really interpretate the picture , just describe what they can se .
• Be sure always allow make people choices with different pictures.
• Show , not tell . It is just another way to say the same , we can try students describe a routine but woth different words or another way to say the same .

TEFL Training Sumary Day Two , Feb 10th , 2011

1.Agenda ,Review ,Journal,Syllabus,Currulum,CLL
2.Information about hot to get a computer was given . Web site computodos.org.
3.Tips about how to teach . Request to the students read a weird story , we can recommend them go through yahoo.com and look for those weird stories .
4.Learning strategies,for example if we are teaching vocabulary , we could write a word vertically in the board with something which sound familiar in spanish . ex.
S,O,C,K,S . this will make students can remember easier . This technique is called ASTM , which stands for Ascertain Select Teach Measure .
5.We make a journal again , there were two subjects , I selected “ a diamond is a piece of coal that did well under pressure ”.
6.Reflection about two questions was given , How much are you teaching? , so How much are you practicing ? .
7.Schema . It is necessary activate stundents schema and scripts .
8.Discussion was introduced with a question . Do children learn faster than adults ? .
9.An explanation was provided about learning languages .
BCIS ( Basic Interpersonal Comunicative Skills ) and CALP , ( Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency ) ,then as teachers we must provie too CALP.
10.We were requested to write or describe What Communicative language is , then we decribe it and everyone brought their opinions.
11.We saw the highlights about teaching from a Jack C .Richards document .
12.Students should be listening and speaking an average of 75% in the class.
13.Another Jack C Richards document was brought concerning how much the teaching has change in the last 30 years.
14 .We worked in groups again and we discussed Maryland Content Standards for Adult ESL/ESOL document .

TEFL Training Summary ,Day One , Feb 9th , 2011

This is a summary about a new experience that I m getting now concerning TEFL training .
It began on February 9th . The facilitator is Mr. John Felperin.
Before starts , I was investigating some issues about education which are directly related to TEFL , I was surprised with information that I got from official web site TEFL.org.
Facts about teaching English are that teachers who teach English should be determined by their beliefs about language and second acquisition language , as well as how the second languages are learned together from and approach to teacher .
A . Language is a vehicle for functional communications, It would make little sense for us teaching language through the memorisation and drilling of uncomprehending sentences patterns.
B. Language is ultimately a series of elements (sounds, word,phrases and sentences ) that must be firmly embedded in the learners memories . Memorisation and drilling of sentence patterns does seem an effective classroom activity.
C. Acquisition of language is a sense of interrelated behaviours acquired through habit formation, the drilling of sentence patterns now not only appears like it would be effective, it has become essential in our minds.
Our beliefs determine our practice.
Based on that little briefing about language acquisition, let’s get into this journal.
3 Subjects were provided and we would chose one of those to interpret and write about it , after discussed with our classmate , the classmate should provide and write a kind of feedback with positive matters , I selected “ The biggest room in the world is the room for improvement “ . I wrote as my interpretation that there is always new ways to do the things better.
After that a job aid was distributed to all participants The Facilitator has already written a chart in the board with some interesting information, first of all this chart “ agenda “ was a good example to use in the classrooms , he explained that we have to let students know what is going to happen in the class , avoid hide students speculate , just let them know with no mysteries .
Tips were given to us , for examples.
Teach idiomatic expressions, Teach students how to download files from Internet , mp3 files .
The next event that we were requested to do it was interview our classmate and ask his/her hobbies and personal general information , after that everyone elicit his/her info .
Back to the Facilitator, ( Jon Felperin ) he mentioned that teach without a book it is possible , the books must be considered as resources . not the main text , As a result , in this training , Indicators will be teach . The indicators we can use for examples are CASAS.
The chart drew in the board was the next one, which a consider very interesting and I learnt several abbreviations that I

Tips provided were ; Make our SS’s independents , let SS’s know where they can find information , as a result we eill develop SS’s autonomy.
FACTS ; English language is 70% Inductive and 30% is Deductive .
In a reading part , to get success the SS’s must have at least 98% of vocabulary known and the rest of 2% unknown .
SS’s must learn at least 8 – 10 words a day.
Other. we can find information in Oxford university web page , 3,000 words more commonly used.
An Electronic file (Guide to TEFL 52 pages.)was distributed among all participants , that is a very extensive information about ways to teach and investigation results about education .
Tips were provided again concerning to get involve SS’s in real situations.
We need to know competences as well , We must be convince ourselves that a change is necessary , be open mind too .
